Michigan State CNA Requirements and Approved CNA Programs

Aspiring nurse aides in Michigan must successfully complete an approved CNA training program to become certified. The Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA), which is a subdivision of the Michigan Department of Community Health, is the governing body that oversees CNA certification in Michigan. LARA reviews and approves all qualifying training programs and contracts with Prometric to administer the state nurse aide exam and maintain the Michigan Nurse Aide Registry. All nurse aides must pass the exam, after training, in order to work at licensed healthcare facilities within the state.

Certification Requirements

In accordance with federal and state regulations, the Michigan Nurse Aide Registry only lists licensed CNAs approved to work in long-term care facilities. LARA requires licensed home health care agencies, long-term healthcare agencies, adult day care programs, and other medical facilities to check the state registry and verify a CNA’s status before extending an offer of employment.

Prerequisites to Training

While LARA’s guidelines do not exempt non-high school graduates, some training providers expect applicants to demonstrate good reading and communication skills required to pass the state evaluation. Also, individuals with a high school diploma or GED equivalent can earn more. To qualify for entry to state approved nurse aide training programs, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Must be in good physical and mental health
  • Complete a satisfactory criminal background screen
  • Provide a current report of up-to-date immunization
  • Demonstrate the ability to read and write English
  • Some programs may ask you to provide a high school diploma.

Michigan’s Certified Nurse Aide Training Requirements

There are more than 200 excellent NAT programs located across the state. These state-approved programs offer a minimum 75 hours, which includes 59 hours of formal classroom training and 16 hours of manual skills instruction.

Apart from the pre-evaluation training, you’ll need to take twelve continuing education credits, during your in-service sessions. Continuing education aims to impart advanced knowledge and skills to help CNAs provide quality care to patients or residents.

Some of the recognized training institutions include high schools, community colleges, universities, vocational institutes, nursing homes, adult education programs, the American Red Cross and other freestanding providers. The state does not recognize online programs. The approved curriculum must cover 51 key tasks, some of which will be tested during the skills component of the state evaluation.

Please refer to the list of state-accredited programs below to ensure the CNA class you select has the approval of Michigan regulatory agencies. The department has the right to refuse your application for testing if you do not graduate from a state-accredited program.

Cost of Training

The cost of training varies between $500 and $2200. Additional costs may add up to $500 for textbooks, supplies, uniform and the state evaluation fee. Most programs do not offer financial aid, but your employer may sponsor the training if you work at a long-term healthcare facility. The American Red Cross offers subsidized training to low-income families.

Nurse Aide Testing

After completing the NAT program, you must pass a written and skills test, administered by Headmaster LLP, in order to obtain a license to work in Michigan. The state’s registry only lists licensed CNAs who are authorized to work in long-term care facilities.

The two-part evaluation comprises of a written (or oral) test and clinical skills evaluation. You must pass both components to receive your certificate to work. The Register Nurse evaluator selects skills at random, so it’s crucial that you understand how to execute all the required skills including dressing, feeding, taking height and weight measurements and recording the details, hair and nail care, bed baths, dressing, transfers and lifts, etc. Headmaster has the candidate handbook with all the information you need to prepare for certification. You will also find other valuable resources on the Michigan website. You must take and pass the test within one year of completing your approved training program.

You are limited to three attempts to pass the knowledge and skill test portions of the exam within 24 months from your date of nursing aide training program completion. If you do not complete testing within 24 months from completion of training, you must complete a new Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) approved training program to become eligible for further attempts on the nurse aide exam.

Certification Costs

Submit your payment to Headmaster during the online registration.

Testing fees are:

$125 – Initial knowledge/oral and skills test

$125 – Retake knowledge/oral test (second and third attempts retake)

$125 – Skill test (second and third attempts retake)

Your test results will be officially scored and double checked by Headmaster score teams. Official test results will be available by signing in to your TMU record after 7:00 pm on the business day after your test event.

Reciprocity for Out-of-State CNAs

If you currently hold a nurse aide certification in another state, you may be eligible for reciprocity under the conditions listed in the Michigan Health Code. You must first be in good standing from a state that meets the Michigan requirements for reciprocity to be eligible for certification.

Michigan requirements for reciprocity include:

  • Completion of a training program that is consistent with the Federal Code of Regulations
  • Training program that requires a minimum of 75 course hours of prior to taking the competency evaluation exam
  • States that allow candidates to exempt out of the training course hours or testing are exempt

States that meet or exceed the Michigan requirements include:

  • Alabama
  • Alaska
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Connecticut
  • Georgia
  • Hawaii
  • Idaho
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Iowa

Renewal

Your Michigan CNA certification remains valid for two years from the date of issue.

Renewal notifications are sent out 45 days before the certification expiration date via email and text message. No renewal certifications are sent via USPS mail. You must keep your demographic information updated to receive notifications.

You can check your registry status and update your address and phone number and check your eligibility expiration date online at any time. Any registry name changes must be verified with appropriate documentation,

Renewal every 24 months is required to maintain your eligibility to work. Before you apply for renewal, you must be prepared to confirm work for pay as a nurse aide performing nursing or nursing-related services at least eight (8) consecutive hours during the 24-month period of certification. You will not be eligible for renewal if there are misconduct restrictions listed against you on the Registry.

All renewal requests must be submitted electronically in your TMU account. Use your credentials to sign in and follow the instructions to complete your renewal.

Renewal process:

Submit your renewal application online.

  • Log into your account in Headmaster.
  • Provide proof of employment providing nursing or nursing related services for monetary compensation (for a minimum of 8 hours in the last 24 months).
  • Pay the renewal fee of $20

Important points:

  • Your certificate must be renewed prior to the expiration date listed on the current certificate.
  • You should submit renewal requests and payment as soon as possible after receipt of a renewal notice from Headmaster (but not earlier than 45 days before the certification expiration date).
  • Do not submit renewal documents directly to the State of Michigan.
  • Your renewal certificate is good for 24 months from the last certificate’s expiration date.
  • If you submit late or incomplete renewal requests, your certificate will lapse the day after the expiration date.
  • You may not work as a CNA with a lapsed or expired certificate.

For lapsed CNA certificate less than 24 months of its expiration date:

  • You may follow the standard renewal process above
