Virginia CNA Requirements and State Approved CNA Programs

Before you move forward with your new career as a Certified Nursing Assistant, you need to successfully complete a Virginia state-approved training program. Nursing students, nursing graduates, and lapsed certificate holders are also eligible for practice after passing the nurse aide competency exam. The Virginia Board of Nursing serves as the governing body for licensure, Nurse Aide Registry, and approved training programs. Credentia, through a contract with the Board, administers the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program to all qualifying applicants.

Certification Requirements

The state of Virginia requires nurse aides to obtain a license to work as CNAs at long-term healthcare facilities, home health care agencies, adult care programs and licensed healthcare facilities. Employers must verify the status of the prospective employee on the National Nurse Aide Registry before extending an offer of employment.

Prerequisites to Training

The Board of Nursing does not have a strict guideline when it comes to the candidate’s prior education. However, it is recommended that you have a high school diploma as demonstration of your ability to keep up with the program’s intensive workload. High school graduates have a higher income earning potential and better opportunities to advance their careers. Some nurse aide training providers stipulate a high school diploma as a requirement to entry into the program. Other prerequisites to sign up for these programs are:

  • Criminal background check (fingerprint method)
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • A negative TB test report
  • Medical exam
  • Proof of immunization of tetanus, measles, rubella, and mumps.
  • The ability to read and write English
  • Some programs require a CPR card
  • High school diploma (recommended).

Virginia’s Certified Nurse Aide Training Requirements

By May 12, 2023 Nurse Aide Training Programs in Virginia must cover a minimum of 140 clock hours of theory and practical instruction. At least 20 hours of the curriculum must be specifically designed for the acquisition of skills in the laboratory. The program must also provide at least 24 hours of instruction prior to direct contact of a student with a client. Clinical training must be at least 40 hours of providing direct client care. Five of the clinical hours may be in a setting other than a geriatric long-term care facility. The 40 hours of clinical training must not include hours of observation. Additionally, employment orientation to facilities must not be included in the 140 hours allotted for the training.

Make sure you refer to the Board’s list of approved programs, or check the list below, before you enroll in any program. The department could refuse to issue a license if you fail to complete an approved program.

Cost of Training

Expect to pay anywhere from $1,150 to $3700 for nurse aide training in Virginia. Additional expenses include costs for textbooks, uniform, supplies, class handouts, and the state evaluation fee. If you take the training at a nursing home or other healthcare facility, you might qualify for free training. Financial aid via grants, scholarship and loans might be available to low-income families.

Nurse Aide Testing

The National Nurse Aide Assessment Program, administered by Credentia, helps the state determine whether you can safely perform your tasks as an entry-level nurse aide. There are two parts of the evaluation, the written (or oral) test and the skills test, and they’re both administered on the same day. You must pass both components in order to obtain your certification and listing on the Virginia Nurse Aide Registry.

The written component contains 70 multiple choice questions. Alternatively, you can select the oral option using a headset and tape recorder. The oral exam contains 60 multiple choice questions and 10 reading comprehension questions. Note: You must request the oral option in advance when you submit your application for testing.

During the skills evaluation, you’ll have to execute five nurse aide skills – issued at random. You’ll have 30 minutes to complete all five tasks while a Registered Nurse evaluates your ability.

You’ll have up to 24 months after completing your training to pass the state exam. You’ll have three attempts (3 written, 3 skills) to take the exam. No shows are not counted as attempts.

Online Registration and Scheduling

Create a CAN365 online account to register for the exam. The account can be created after you complete a Virginia state-approved training course. Online registration is quick, convenient, and an environmentally responsible way to register for the exam. It eliminates the transit time associated with mailing a paper application.

  • Make an online reservation in CAN365 via a PC. You may schedule your written (or oral) exam as early as the following day depending on availability
  • Indicate any criminal convictions or denial of certification/licensure in Virginia or another state on the online application. Failure to reveal this information is considered falsification of an application and grounds for denial of certification.
  • Provide any additional information required for review by the Board including a certified copy of all conviction order(s), evidence that all court ordered requirements were met, letter explaining the facts and circumstances leading to the criminal offence, letters of support from your employers

Certification Costs

The testing fee varies. See the fee schedule below:

$45 for Written Exam

$95 for Skills Evaluation

$45 for Oral Exam

Credentia accepts payment using credit card, debit card, single use card, or electronic voucher. The electronic voucher can only be purchased by the training program.

Advanced Certified Nurse Aide

If you meet the requirements outlined below, you can submit an application for Advanced Certified Nurse Aide certification online through the Virginia Board of Nursing.

  • Must hold current certification as a certified nurse aide in Virginia;
  • Must have been certified for at least three years as a certified nurse aide;
  • Must have never had a finding of abuse, neglect or misappropriation of patient property entered on a nurse aide registry in any jurisdiction and have not had any disciplinary actions taken by the board within the five years preceding application for advanced certification;
  • Must have a recommendation for advanced certification from a licensed nurse who has supervised you in providing direct patient care for at least six months within the past year; and
  • Have successfully completed a minimum of 120 hours of advanced training in an approved program that includes a competency evaluation acceptable to the board.

CNA Endorsement

If you’re an out-of-state CNA, your nurse aide certificate may be endorsed by application to Virginia. To be eligible for endorsement of a nurse aide certificate from another state, you must have graduated from a state-approved nurse aide education program that meets the requirements for clinical training and competency in Virginia and have satisfactorily completed a competency evaluation program, and be currently registered in another state with no finding of abuse, neglect, or misappropriation of property.

Follow these steps to initiate the process:

  • Submit a completed application for endorsement (no fee for application)
  • Must have a current Nurse Aide Certificate Registered in another state
  • Must provide verification of current registration of nurse aide certification(s) from all states registered
  • Attest to not being listed on the abuse or neglect registry as a nurse aide maintained in any state, OR
  • Enclose from the clerk(s) of court, certified copies of all criminal conviction records

Applications are retained for one year only. If you do not complete the requirements within one year of the Board receiving the application, you will need to submit a new application. The application processing time is between 30 to 45 business days.

CNAs certified in Florida, Maryland, and California may not be eligible for endorsement. Candidates from Alabama, Illinois, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Hawaii may need to provide additional documents depending on the year or certification.

CNA Renewal

You must renew your certification every two years. In order to renew the certification, you must work as a paid CNA for 8 continual hours during the past 24 months and notify the registry of any changes in your address. Your application for renewal must be submitted online.

CNA Reinstatement

If your nurse aide certificate has lapsed for more than 90 days, you must submit an application for reinstatement to resume practice. To be eligible for reinstatement, you must have performed nursing-related activities within the two years preceding the expiration date of your nurse aide certificate and within two years of the date the Board of Nursing receives your reinstatement application.

If you were previously subject to findings of abuse, neglect, or misappropriation of property, you are not eligible for reinstatement of your certification.

If you did not meet the specific work requirements, you must re-take the nurse aide competency exam to determine competency for reinstatement of your certification.

Complete the following steps for reinstatement of your certification:

  • Submit a completed reinstatement application and required fee of $30. Fees must be paid by check or money order, payable to the Treasurer of Virginia
  • Provide verification of performance of nursing-related activities for compensation in the two years prior to the expiration date of the nurse aide certification and within two years of the Board’s receipt of the application
  • Enclose from the clerk or court, certified copies of all criminal conviction records or a certified statement from the court stating records are no longer available
  • Provide any additional information that the VBON requires as additional evidence that you are prepared to resume practice in a safe, competent manner
