A State Registered Nurse Aide is a valuable member of the health care team, providing the bulk of hands-on direct care in long-term care facilities. The SRNA will assist residents with bathing, grooming, and other activities of daily living, provide emotional support when needed, and measure vital signs. Employment opportunities are available in hospitals, clinics, home health agencies, psychiatric care, and physicians’ offices though the majority of these professionals tend to work in long-term care settings.

The SRNA training program will cover all the essential areas needed to care for persons of various ages, states of health, and cultural backgrounds. Programs in Kentucky must cover a minimum of 75 hours of theory and clinical training to prepare students for the state exam. The state competency exam includes written and skills components that assess candidates’ understanding of the needs of patients. Those who pass the exam will be placed on the Kentucky Nurse Aide Registry and will be prepared for a dynamic and rewarding career caring for others. The rise in the senior population (65 and over) increases the demand for health care services in every possible area. Healthcare Learning Center

The State Registered Nursing Assistant program at the Healthcare Learning Center combines theory and practical instruction to prepare students for state registration and entry-level employment in long-term care. The coursework helps to develop professionals capable of providing high quality, competent care under the direction of a licensed nurse. Graduates will understand the physiological, psychological, and sociological impact that being institutionalized will have on the resident. They will demonstrate compassion and organization, understand their role in the nursing facility and perform their responsibilities in collaboration with the health care team, demonstrate skills and techniques in the performance of basic nursing procedures and according to standards, have a knowledge of resident rights as they assist them with the activities of daily living, and be sensitive to residents’ social, emotional, physical, and social needs. The curriculum covers 88 hours of theory and practical training. The mandatory clinical is a vital part of the program. Students must attend all classes and clinical sessions to graduate from the program. Day, evening, and online classes are available. The online class requires completion of 75 hours of training online plus two skills days and two clinical days at a skilled nursing facility. The duration of the program is 11 days.

St. Elizabeth Healthcare Nurse Aide Training Program

The SRNA program at St Elizabeth Healthcare prepares students to provide basic nursing care under the direction of a licensed nurse. The program includes 80 hours of theory, hands-on lab skills, and supervised clinical experiences in a skilled nursing facility. The program is open to any adult who meets the requirements and nursing and pre-nursing students. Graduates will be prepared to take the state competency evaluation to become an SRNA. The duration of the program is 10 days. The program is offered in a traditional and online format. The online course includes computer-based learning modules and on-site clinical time. Candidates for the online course must provide proof of acceptance to a college or university. The computer modules must be completed before commencing the clinical experience. Candidates must commit to required hours for classroom and clinical time. Spaces are limited in the program. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Admission criteria:

  • Submit a completed application and $100 deposit
  • Provide proof of high school diploma, GED, or college transcript – an acceptance letter may also be accepted

Eastern Kentucky University

The State Registered Nurse Aide Program at Eastern Kentucky University is facilitated with the approval of the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services. The curriculum includes 75 hours of theory and practical instruction – 59 hours in the classroom and 16 hours of clinical rotation in a skilled nursing facility. Areas of study include medical terminology, human body structure and function, infection control, the role and responsibility of the nurse aide, patient transfers, law and ethics, patients’ rights and independence, measuring vital signs, positioning and turning, fluid intake and output, personal hygiene, nutrition and feeding, and communication. The program commences in October of the Fall semester and runs for 9 weeks. The spring session is offered in evenings on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The summer session meets in the month of July and runs for 4 weeks. The day program meets Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. Admission is limited to 15 students for each cycle and selection is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Admission criteria:

  • Must be at least 16 years old
  • No high school diploma or GED required
  • Provide a copy of immunization record. The document must indicate students’ name, DOB, and dates the shots were issued with the name of the healthcare provider – MMR, Tdap, Varicella, Hepatitis B, and Influenza
  • Provide social security card and picture identification
  • Submit to background check initiated by EKU
  • Pass a drug test administered by Landmark of Laurel Creek
  • Take a two-step TB skin test
  • Pay the tuition of $600

Tuition for the program is $600. It includes malpractice insurance, TB skin test, background check, and drug screening. The payment must be made at orientation. Additional costs include textbook, scrubs, non-skid shoes, watch with a second hand, and state test registration fee.

Health Education Center LLC

The self-paced, online SRNA program offered by the Health Education Center prepares students for the Kentucky state competency exam. The program comprises of eight online modules that deliver the content via lectures and skill videos. Each module will conclude with an exam and a final comprehensive exam at the conclusion of all modules. A federal mandated clinical will round-off the training. The two-day clinical experience serves to reinforce the knowledge and skills in a real-world setting and under the direction of a licensed nurse instructor. Students must obtain a minimum of 70 percent on all tests and attend all clinical assignments to receive a Certificate of Completion. The total program covers 59 hours for lecture and skills and 16 hours for the clinical experience. The self-paced program must be completed in one year or less.

  • Pay all required fees before the course begins

Health Care Training of Kentucky

Health Care Training of Kentucky trains students for a career as a State Registered Nurse Aide in just two weeks. Students will receive skills and knowledge to deliver direct care in long-term care facilities. The curriculum will cover 75 hours of theory and practical instruction in vital signs, prevention of infections, end-of-life care, restorative and rehabilitation techniques, positioning and turning, personal care and grooming, observation and reporting, nutrition and feeding, patient safety, and communication and interpersonal relationships. Graduates will receive a Certificate of Completion and will be eligible to take the Competency Evaluation Program (CEP).

Health Care Training Institute is approved by the Kentucky Department for Medicaid Services to offer nurse aide training. With over 40 years of combined experience, instructors will prepare students for success on the state evaluation exam and in practice. The curriculum will cover 75 hours of theory and practical training. The duration of the program is two weeks. Classroom times are 8:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday. The clinical time is 6:00 am to 2:30 pm.
