In accordance with the federal Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1987 (OBRA-87), the Alabama Department of Public Health requires nurse aide candidates to complete an approved CNA training program and pass the state competency exam to work legally in a healthcare setting. Program graduates must challenge and pass both components of the evaluation within 24 months days of graduation. State-accredited programs must facilitate a minimum 75 hours of nurse aide education including 16 hours of supervised clinical practicum. Topics covered include emergency care, mental health, nutrition and feeding, residents’ rights, personal care, patient safety, basic nursing principles, communication skills and observation and reporting. Pearson VUE administers the nurse aide competency exam in the state. Students must pass both components of the evaluation (written and skills test) in order to obtain listing on the Alabama Nurse Aide Registry.
Saad Healthcare is a leading provider of nurse aide education in Mobile, Alabama. The training prepares students to meet their responsibilities as entry-level certified nurse aides. The two-week program includes 7 days of classroom lectures taught by experienced nursing professional. Upon completion of the classroom education, students must complete 3 days of hands-on clinical as a requirement for graduation. Topics covered include the role of the nursing assistant, infection control, law and ethics, documentation, medical terminology, body mechanics, environmental safety, vital signs, restorative care and rehabilitation, psychological needs, death, dying, personal grooming and working with the elderly. Class sizes are limited to 24 persons per class. New classes begin every two weeks. Graduates are eligible to take the state nurse aide competency at Saad’s approved testing facility. Tuition is $320 plus the cost of textbooks, uniforms, state exam fee, and other supplies.
