Certified Nursing Aides administer direct care to residents in long-term care facilities, hospitals and home healthcare agencies under the supervision of licensed and registered nurses. Nurse aides in Virginia must obtain certification in order to execute nursing related tasks and protect the patients’ health, safety and welfare. The Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1987 (OBRA) requires nurse aides to complete specific requirements before they’re allowed to take up entry-level positions at nursing homes and other facilities. They must:
- Complete a Nurse Aide Training Program (NATP) – a minimum 120 hours in Virginia.
- Challenge the state competency nurse evaluation exam
- Obtain certification from the Virginia Board of Nursing
- Apply for registration on the state Nurse Aide Registry
The Virginia Board of Nursing oversees the implementation of ORBA requirements within the state. Approved training programs must provide the minimum training with 80 hours of classroom instruction and 40 hours of clinical experience. Upon completion of the training, graduates are eligible to challenge the competency evaluation administered by Pearson VUE in Virginia.
