Indiana CNA Requirements and State Approved CNA Programs

The Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) is the governing body for certified nurse aides within the state. The department outlines the training requirements and maintains the Nurse Aide Registry. All Certified Nurse Aides within the state must:

  • Complete an accredited nurse aide training class
  • Pass the written and skills test on the state competency evaluation
  • Maintain a good standing (no instances of abuse or neglect) on the Indiana Nurse Aide Registry.

Certification Requirements

Before you take up employment as a nurse aide in a licensed nursing home, hospital, hospice or home health agency, you must obtain your license to become a Certified Nurse Aide. The ISDH maintains registries for both Nurse Aides and Home Health Aides and ensures candidates receive training, experience and testing in order to fulfil state requirements for these healthcare professionals.

Employers must verify a CNA’s listing on the registry to verify that the prospective employee meets the requirements fill the vacancy.

Prerequisites to Training

At some point, during the application or before the clinical component of the course, you will need to consent to a criminal background check and physical exam. You’ll also need to present results of a TB test and immunizations – other requirements vary by institution. Most state-approved programs also expect students to:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

Indiana’s Certified Nurse Aide Training Requirements

ISDH requires nurse aides to complete 105 training before attempting the state evaluation. The training covers 30 hours of classroom lectures and 75 hours of clinical experience. Students must complete a minimum 16 hours of classroom training before participating in clinical rotations. Please refer to the department’s listing of approved programs or check below to ensure you’re enrolling in an approved course. The department has the right to refuse your application for testing if you do not graduate from a state-accredited program.

Cost of Training

The cost of nursing assistant programs at universities, community colleges, vocational institutes and allied health schools fall somewhere between $400 and $1600. Before enrolling in a program, find out about all the associated costs. Some institutions list the cost with all expenses included while others list the cost of tuition alone. Registration, exam fees, uniform, textbooks, clinical rotation, supplies, and lab time may have separate fees. Keep in mind that most schools do not offer financial aid. However, some schools provide flexible payment plans to all students. Free CNA training may be available for needy candidates through the Health Department’s Public Fund, Indiana WorkOne Center and the American Red Cross.

Nurse Aide Testing

The ISDH has relinquished the responsibility of the certified nurse aide competency evaluations to Ivy Tech Community College. Applications for the evaluation must go to:

Ivy Tech has a central testing office that processes applications and schedule testing dates for applicants across the state. You should preregister for the evaluation as dates fill up early. If you prefer, you can take the test at the facility where you trained as long as they’re an authorized testing center. If you receive a passing grade, your name will be automatically added to the Indiana Nurse Aide Registry.

Certification Costs

The state evaluation costs $75 total for the written and skills test. However, if you’re taking component only, the cost is $65.

Out-of-State CNAs

Out-of-state CNAs can get listed on the Indiana Nurse Aide Registry after completing the following steps:

  • Be in good standing on the out-of-state registry
  • Submit an application for the state evaluation
  • Schedule a date for testing at Ivy Tech and pass the evaluation.
