The first step to becoming a CNA in Illinois is completing a nurse aide training program approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health. The Health Care Workers’ Registry, managed by the Department of Health, catalogs training information for certified nurse aides and other health care workers within the state. There are several routes to get listed on the national registry, but the traditional route for newcomers to the healthcare industry is through an approved training program followed by successful completion of a nurse aide competency exam.

Certification Requirements
Since CNAs are an integral part of the healthcare industry, the state imposes specific regulations to protect CNAs and the patients they care for. All practicing CNAs must obtain certification to demonstrate their ability to execute their tasks and responsibilities. Bona fide CNAs obtain their certification after completing an Illinois Department of Health-approved training program and state regulated evaluation. Employers at licensed healthcare facilities must check the nurse aide’s status on the Health Care Workers Registry before extending an offer of employment.
Prerequisites to Training
Prospective CNAs within the state must have completed a minimum eight years of grade school or equivalent knowledge and demonstrate the ability to read and understand English. Most training providers within the state will accept non-high school graduates as long as they’re able to pass the school’s reading comprehension and math evaluations.
Note: You can skip training if you have an RN or LPN license in Illinois or another state, military experience as a CNA, 40 hours of clinical experience from a nursing program, or CNA training from another state or country.
Other prerequisites include:
- Criminal background check (fingerprint method)
- Be at least 16 years old
- Medical exam
- Proof of immunization
- Negative TB test
- Minimum eight-grade education
- Attend the school’s orientation session
- Some programs require applicants to present a Healthcare Provider CPR card.
Illinois’ Certified Nurse Aide Training Requirements
Community colleges, vocational schools, high schools, nursing homes, private institutes and other approved nurse aide training providers must facilitate a minimum of 150 hours of training including classroom lectures, labs, and clinical externship. The length of training could be as long as 4 months or as little as 3 weeks depending on the school’s schedule. Typical CNA coursework covers patients’ rights, personal care skills, ethics, communication, transfers, charting, observation, nutrition, anatomy, medical terminology and caring for persons with special needs.
Upon completion of an approved training program, you’ll have up to two years after graduation to take and pass the Illinois nurse aide evaluation. Check the list below or visit the Illinois Department of Health to find a list of accredited training providers.
Cost of Training
Free CNA training is available through several state-funded programs, and you can enroll if you meet the programs’ requirements. Numerous hospitals and nursing homes also sponsor training for prospective employees. If you want to take a fast-track route to starting your career as a CNA, you can enroll in a paid program and pay anywhere from $1,000 to $2,700 for training. Apart from the cost of tuition, students should allocate funds to cover expenses such as textbooks, handouts, uniform, supplies and the fee for the state evaluation.
Nurse Aide Testing
The written competency test is a requirement for certification in Illinois. A nurse-aide can proceed to this step after completing an approved training program. The Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (SIU-C), through a contract with the Illinois Department of Health, is the governing body for administering the written portion of the evaluation at several testing sites throughout the state. Some testing sites have integrated computer-based testing into the CNA Competency Exam offerings. Information on these available test administrations will be available from your account page after you have verified your eligibility for testing.
The evaluation covers the skills, knowledge, and abilities needed to execute roles and responsibilities as a nurse aide. There are 200 tasks validated by the state of Illinois, and they’re grouped into six broad categories. The evaluation can cover any or all of these tasks including communication and information, basic nursing skills, personal care skills, residents’ rights, basic restorative skills and providing mental health and social service needs. SIU-C administers the exams and transmits the results to the registry. Students have up to three attempts to pass the exam. If an individual fails the evaluation within the three allotted attempts, he or she must retake an approved training program before challenging the written test again.

- No show exam reschedule – $45
- Failed exam retake – $75
- Retest for recertification – $75
On exam day, you must walk with the following:
- Two forms of identification – one with your photo
- Three No. 2 pencils and eraser

Out-of-State CNAs
Out-of-state CNAs may be added to the Healthcare Workers Registry if they’re in good and active standing on another state registry. The Illinois Department of Health approves all applications for reciprocity as long as the applicant meets the following requirements:
- Provide documentation of current registration from the other state. The document should indicate whether the certification meets the requirements outlined by the Code of Federal Regulations.
- There should be no instances of abuse, neglect, or misappropriation of property in the applicant’s home state’s registry or any other CNA registry.
- Must have no disqualifying convictions on the home state’s registry.
Renewal
Full-time paid CNAs automatically retain their certification. CNAs, who fail to work within a two-year period of their registry listing, will lose their approved certification. The CNA can apply for recertification after completing a manual skills test and a written competency test.
