Certified Nurse Aide training fosters the development of knowledge and skills required to work in a healthcare facility. Adults will gain an understanding of the procedures and terminology that they will encounter in the workplace. They will become eligible to take the written and skills components of the State of Michigan Certified Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation. After obtaining certification, nurse aids will qualify for employment opportunities in residential care facilities, hospitals, and home health care.

In medical settings, CNAs face the challenging but rewarding task of providing basic care to residents. They assist them with daily living activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating, cleaning rooms, emptying bedpans, turning and transferring patients, communicating patients’ concerns with physicians and nurses, measuring and recording vital signs, and observing patients to detect adverse reactions to treatments or medications.

Jackson Area Career Center – Adult Career Education Program

Jackson Area Career Center prepares students for success on the Michigan Certified Nurse Aide exam. Candidates who pass the exam will obtain the certification required for employment at long-term care facilities. Experienced instructors will cover classroom lectures and practical experiences in a long-term care facility. The training will cover basic nursing skills, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, infection control, range of motion exercises, rehabilitation, communication and interpersonal skills, Alzheimer’s care, mental health, and death and dying. Classes meet Mondays and Tuesdays from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm for 5 weeks. The clinical sessions are on Fridays and Saturday from 6:30 am to 3:30 pm. They will be conducted at Faith Haven Senior Care Center.

Admission criteria:

  • Submit a completed online application
  • Pay the registration fee of $10
  • Submit results of a TB test completed within the last year
  • Documentation of a flu shot when enrolling during the flu season
  • Complete the criminal background check release form to authorize a background check

Tuition for the program is $880. Graduates who secure employment in a Medicare-funded facility will be eligible for reimbursement from the state of Michigan. The state test will cost an additional $125.

Premier Medical Academy

The state approved Nursing Assistant Certificate program at Premier Medical Academy prepares students for the state exam Graduates are eligible to apply to take the Nurse Aide Competency Exam for certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant. The curriculum will cover 90 hours of theory and hands-on training in basic nursing skills, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, measuring and recording vital signs, observation and reporting, infection control, communication and interpersonal skills, and hospice care. Students will also how to measure fluid intake and output, respecting patients’ safety and independence, legal and ethical principles, the role and responsibilities of the nurse aide, and working as a part of the health care team.

Dorsey Emergency Medical Academy

Dorsey Emergency Medical Academy’s Nurse Aide program blends classroom instruction with hands-on practice in a simulated lab and skilled nursing facility. Students will learn basic nursing principles that will enable them to provide direct care in various health care settings. Program graduates will be eligible to take the State of Michigan Certified Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation for the certification required for employment. The curriculum will cover 80 hours of theory and practical work and includes the supervised clinical rotations. Topics covered will include resident rights, nutrition and hydration, infection control, interpersonal skills, vital signs, long-term care facility and residents, nutrition and hydration, safety and emergency, death and dying, care of cognitively impaired, communicable disease, and personal skills. Daytime and evening classes are available.

Admission criteria:

  • Be physically capable of performing the requirements of a nurse aide
  • Be able to lift 75 pounds using proper body mechanics
  • Obtain written clearance from an obstetrician if pregnant
  • Have no criminal record of a felony or a misdemeanor conviction
  • Complete a PPD-type TB test to screen for TB – must be completed by the first day of class
  • Documentation of Hepatitis B vaccination series

DRM International Learning Center, LLC

The Certified Nursing Assistant program at DRM International Learning Centers prepares students for a career in healthcare in just two weeks. The curriculum features 92 hours of lectures, lab practical, and clinical instruction. Students will spend 34 hours in the classroom, 34 hours in the skills lab, and 24 hours of supervised patient care experiences in a long-term care facility. Training will cover topics such as patients rights and independence, infection control, mental health and social services, care of the cognitively impaired, personal care skills, basic nursing skills, observation and reporting, and communication skills.
