A Certified Nursing Assistant meets patients’ physical, emotional, and social needs under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or a Licensed Vocational Nurse. CNAs work primarily in long-term care, but they may practice in many other settings. Though they wear many hats, their primary role involves the provision of basic nursing care to residents or patients and assisting them with the activities of daily living. CNAs are the primary caregivers in long-term care facilities, and due to the personal nature of the work, they often form close relationships with the patients for which they care. They measure and record vital signs, clean and sanitize rooms, observe patients and report concerns to nurses and physicians, answer call lights, change bed sheets, and bath and dress patients. Other duties might include lifting patients from the bed to the wheeling, supporting patients’ families, setting up medical equipment, preparing patients for medical treatments, collecting samples, and turning and repositioning patients.
Patient care offers numerous rewards to many health care workers. The challenges of making beds, cleaning wounds, and emptying bedpans may be too much for some, but the joys of restoring health and offering support and comfort to patients and their families more than compensates for those challenges. If you’re on the fence concerning your call to patient care, nurse aide training and practice will help you to decide without spending an exorbitant amount of time and money. CNA classes are available in colleges, nursing homes, proprietary schools, and high schools. Some programs require a high school diploma. Others will administer an evaluation to determine your ability to succeed in the program. All applicants must have a clear criminal background check, drug screen, and TB screen to participate in direct patient care experiences at the designated clinical agencies.
