Nursing assistants in long-term care facilities assist patients with their daily living needs including bathing and feeding patients who are elderly, ill, or injured, they keep patients’ rooms tidy by making beds, changing linen, and emptying bedpans, and measure blood pressure, pulse, temperature and other vital signs. CNAs set up medical equipment, move equipment from one room to another, and prepare tools for patients’ exams, and work so closely with patients that they are able to observe changes in patients’ conditions and report concerns to a nurse or physician. CNAs perform their duties under the supervision of a registered nurse. The education and experience of a nurse aide provide excellent preparation for a career as a licensed practical nurse or registered nurse.

Asher Comprehensive Training Center, Inc.

Asher Comprehensive Training Center’s Nurse Aide Program provides a fast track to a career in health. The curriculum covers 120 instructional hours: 70 classroom hours and 50 clinical hours. Areas of study include the role and responsibility of the nurse aide, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, infection control, communication, transferring and positioning patients, personal hygiene, measuring vital signs, range of motion exercises, care for the cognitively impaired, hospice care, Alzheimer’s care, safety procedures, assisting with rehabilitative treatments, nutrition. Graduates are eligible to sit for the Virginia Nurse Aide Boards for Certification as CNA. They will work in facilities where there is a high demand for direct care professionals including hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities. Day and evening schedules are available. Day classes meet Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesdays from 9:00 am to 10:30 pm for 7 weeks. Evening classes meet from 5:00 pm to 2:30 pm for 7 weeks.

Chester Career College

The Nurse Aide program at Chester Career College gives adults the opportunity to prepare for a new career in healthcare. The training includes all the requirements they need to provide responsible nursing care in acute or long-term facilities. Students learn the role of the nurse aide, caring for patients with common diseases, the nursing process, meeting patients’ physical, spiritual, social, and emotional needs, the legal and ethical aspects of care, trends in health care, anatomy and physiology, infection control, and patients’ rights. The training will also include intensive preparation for the state competency evaluation. Students will build clinical skills in a simulation lab and will demonstrate their proficiency during clinical rotations in a long-term care setting. The clinical rotations will be conducted under the supervision of a licensed nurse. Basic skills demonstrations will include the application of dressings, wound care, monitoring catheters, taking and recording vital signs, enemas, feeding patients, monitoring and reporting adverse reactions to medications or treatments, collecting urinary and stool samples for testing, personal care, recording intake and output, and assisting patients with mobility. Students will complete the program’s 130 hours in approximately 5 weeks.

Tuition for the program is $7.492 per clock hour. The cost includes the required textbook.

Companion Extraordinaire Home Care Services

The state-approved nursing assistant program at Companion Extraordinaire Home Care Services prepares students to provide safe and competent direct care to residents in a long-term care setting. The curriculum covers 135 instructional hours of theory and practical work. Students can expect to learn restorative care techniques, how to measure and record vital signs, personal care of residents, patients’ rights and independence, positioning and transferring patients, end of life care, management of chronic illnesses, and caring for patients with chronic impairments. Upon completion of the theoretical requirements, students will participate in a facility-based clinical rotation where they will care for patients under the direction of a licensed nurse. The clinical rotation provides valuable hands-on experience and exposure to health care and gives a clearer perception of the topics studied in the classroom. The program is available year-round through the Continuing Adult Education Program. Graduates will be eligible to sit for the state competency evaluation to become a Certified Nurse Aide. Successful candidates may be eligible for employment with Companion Extraordinaire Home Care Services.

Richmond Technical Center

The nursing assistant program at Richmond Technical Center is designed for high school students. The one-year program helps students develop the knowledge to become a nurse aide. The classroom the practical instructions also prepare students for the Virginia Nurse Aide Certification Exam. Students who successfully complete the program’s requirements will receive a total of 8 JSRCC college credits. The program will be covered in two semesters – approximately 36 weeks. Course topics include vital signs, infection control, patients’ rights and independence, transfers and positioning of patients, communication techniques, safety and emergency procedures, rehabilitation treatments, medical terminology, the role and responsibility of the nurse aide, and basic nursing skills. Students will be responsible for the purchase of uniforms, resources, and fees to complete the program.

Virginia School for Nurse Aides

Virginia School for Nurse Aides prepares adults to provide competent care in and around Richmond Virginia. The school maintains small class sizes to ensure students receive individualized attention to ensure success in the program. Students learn the role and responsibility of the nurse aide, anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, infection control, communication, personal hygiene, vital signs, patient transfers and positioning, range of motion exercises, care for the cognitively impaired, hospice care, Alzheimer’s care, safety procedures, assisting with rehabilitative treatments, and much more. The school takes a hands-on approach in the skills lab and clinical rotation to help students develop sound clinical skills. The personalized attention and emphasis on hands-on training have contributed to the high pass rate on the Virginia State Board exam. Graduates of the program will be eligible to sit the written and skills competency evaluation in the familiar setting of the school’s facility. Day and evening classes and give students flexibility in their scheduling. Day classes meet Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 2:30 pm for 5 weeks. The evening classes meet Monday through Friday from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm for 5 weeks.
