As a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), you work under the direction of a licensed nurse to care for patients in hospitals, long-term care facilities, and home health care settings. Your responsibilities will cover a wide range of tasks that include measuring vital signs, assisting patients with daily living activities, monitoring patients’ reactions to treatment, moving patients from the bed to the wheelchair, making beds and keeping rooms tidy, and measuring fluid intake and output.

The Nevada Board of Nursing sets the standards for nurse aide training and certification in the state. As a candidate for certification, you must complete a state-approved program and pass a competency exam. Apart from the technical skills, you must be patient, compassionate, and have a genuine desire to help patients recover. Perry Foundation prepares adults for an exciting career in the field of healthcare. The Certified Nursing Assistant Training program equips students with the skills to enter the workforce. Experienced instructors use a student-centered approach to ensure graduates succeed in the complex healthcare environment. The curriculum will cover a broad range of topics, including personal care, the role and responsibility of the nurse aide, basic restorative services, safety and emergency procedures, infection control, communication and interpersonal relations, hospice care, basic nursing skills, nutrition, and quality improvement. Students must complete the required 96 hours of lectures, lab skills, and clinical rotations to graduate from the program. The clinical experience requires a commitment of 32 hours in a skilled nursing facility where students will provide direct care under the guidance of a licensed nurse instructor. Classes meet 24 hours per week for four weeks. They meet Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm – including a 30-minute lunch.

Milan Institute

The nursing assistant program at Milan Institute provides instruction to prepare students for a career as a nursing assistant. The curriculum will cover 128 contact hours of theory, lab, and clinical rotation that will enable students to function competently as a nursing assistant in an acute or long-term care setting. Students will spend 56 hours in the classroom, 40 hours for the nursing assistant lab, and 32 hours for the clinical experience. Students will learn communication and interpersonal communications, HIPAA and patient rights, safety and infection control, vital signs, nutritional requirements, elimination needs, personal care, basic anatomy and physiology, bed making, care for the dying or deceased, legal and ethical principles, and restorative services. The Certificate of Completion will be given to students who complete 100% of the program requirements including a grade of 80% on the written and oral assessments, 100% on the practical skills, and 100% participation in the lectures, lab, and clinical experiences. The duration of the program is six weeks. Day and evening schedules are available.

Saint Therese Learning Institute

The nursing assistant program at Saint Therese Learning Institute prepares students to take the State Nurse Aide Exam. Graduates will receive a Certificate of Completion and will be eligible to sit for the written and skills components of the certification exam. The instruction will cover 130 hours of instruction – 65 hours of lecture, 40 hours of skills lab, and 25 hours of clinical activities. Students must attend 100% of the program hours. Course modules include infection control, personal care skills, vital signs, rehabilitation and restorative techniques, communication and interpersonal skills, basic nursing skills, nutrition, hospice care, basic anatomy and physiology, and safety and emergency procedures. A day and evening schedule is available. The evening class meets from Monday through Friday from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm for six weeks. The clinical sessions meet on the last two Saturday and one Sunday from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. The day class meets Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon for lectures and on the last two Saturday and one Sunday from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm for the clinical session. The day program is six weeks.

College of South Nevada

Enrollment in the Nursing Assistant Certificate program at the College of South Nevada must attend a mandatory orientation session. The 6-credit program will include Nursing Assistant Lecture, Nursing Assistant Lab, and Nursing Assistant Clinical. New students are admitted in the spring, summer, and fall semesters. The program is open entry, so applicants are not required to submit an application to a Limited-Entry program. The lecture part of the program may be offered online. Day and evening schedules are available.

Admission criteria:

  • Must be able to read and write English at an eighth-grade level
  • Complete English 100 or higher or achieve a score of 56 or higher on the Accuplacer Reading Placement test

Standards of Excellence Academy

The Nursing Assistant Program at Standards of Excellence Academy is approved by the Nevada State Board of Nursing. Instruction will take place in the classroom, lab, and clinical facility and will cover anatomy and physiology, CPR, medical terminology, basic nursing skills, vital signs, nutrition, communication and interpersonal relations, infection control, emergency care, rehabilitation and restorative techniques, personal care, and observation and reporting. Successful completion of the theory and clinical rotations will lead to a Certificate of Completion and eligibility to take the Nurse Aide Exam. The duration of the program is six weeks and covers 120 hours of instruction. The school offers additional support at no extra cost. This will include job placement assistance, interviewing skills, pre-test preparation, open labs, and tutoring.
