As a nursing assistant, you’ll provide basic patient care and assist residents with the activities of daily living under the supervision of a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse in a hospital, nursing home, or long-term care facility.

As a vital part of the health care community, you’ll lavish compassionate care on patients to restore health, support independence, and meet the emotional, social, physical, and spiritual needs of residents in a long-term care facility. Your duties will include personal care and grooming, monitoring patients’ response to treatments, keeping patients’ room today, turning and positioning patients, answering call lights, measuring fluid intake and output, collecting samples, setting up and cleaning medical equipment, and measuring vital signs.

Eastfield College

Eastfield College prepares adults for a career in the high demand field of nurse assisting. A combination of theory and practical courses will give students the skills to make a difference in patients’ lives. The program adheres to the educational guidelines that the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services puts forth for nurse aide training. Course topics include infection control, vital signs, basic nursing skills, human anatomy and physiology, range of motion, communication, nutrition and feeding, body structure and function, and fluid input and output. Graduates will be eligible to take the TDADAS Nurse Aide Exam to be added to the Nurse Aide Registry. The duration of the program is seven weeks – 5 weeks for the nursing theory and 2 weeks of supervised patient care in a skilled nursing facility.

Admission criteria:

  • Submit a valid driver’s license or picture ID and social security card
  • Have a valid high school diploma or GED
  • Have valid health insurance
  • Read and sign the confidentiality agreement in the application packet
  • Provide documentation of liability insurance when registering for the class
  • Have a valid BLS or Heartsaver CPR Certification or CPR Course
  • Complete a criminal background check
  • Obtain a negative TB skin test – with the past 12 months
  • Provide proof of immunization – completed Hepatitis B series, seasonal flu shot, varicella, Tdap, MMR
  • Complete drug screen – one week before the clinical class begins

Tuition for the program is $600. Other expenses include Eastfield scrubs, textbook, liability insurance, criminal background check, drug test panel, and CPR card. Up to 80 percent of the tuition may be covered by a Texas Public Education Grant for eligible students.

Global Health Education Network

The Certified Nurse AIDE Training course at Global Health Education Network prepares students for state certification. The program includes didactic and practical instruction in accordance with state and federal guidelines. The licensed nurse instructor will emphasize safe and quality patient care so students will be prepared to make decisions in emergencies, provide patient-centered care, monitor patients’ reactions to medications and treatment, and make interventions that will directly impact patients’ lives. Students will participate in clinical rotations where they will provide direct care under the supervision of a licensed nurse in a long-term care facility. Graduates will receive a Certificate of Completion and will be eligible to take the State Nurse Aide Exam at Global Health or any other approved testing facility. Morning, evening, and weekend schedules are available. The morning class meets from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. The evening class meets from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm for 4 to 5 weeks. The weekend class meets from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm for 8 weeks.

Legacy Career Institute

Legacy Career Institute prepares students for Texas State Certification as a Nurse Aide. Graduates of the program will receive a Certificate of Completion that they can use to apply for the Nurse Aide Exam. The program is approved by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services and includes both theory and practical instruction in the skills that nurse aides need to succeed in long-term care. Course topics include feeding and nutrition, personal care, communication techniques, basic nursing skills, patients’ rights and independence, vitals signs, body structure and function, safety and emergency procedures, positioning and turning, restraints, hospice care, and observation and reporting. New classes begin every Monday and every other Saturday. Classes meet Monday through Friday from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm for three weeks. Weekend classes meet Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm for six weeks. An accelerated class meets Monday through Friday from 9:50 am to 3:30 pm and Saturday or Sunday from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm for 14 days.

Admission criteria:

  • Must be 16 years or older
  • Provide a copy of a valid state ID and social security card
  • Obtain criminal background clearance – the school will conduct the background check according to state regulations
  • Have a high school diploma or GED or pass an entrance exam covering English reading and writing
  • Pass a TB test – information for the test will be provided on the first day of class
  • Make the deposit of $300

Tuition is payable in three installments before the program ends. Job placement assistance is available for program graduates.

Brightside Institute

The CNA class at Brightside Institute delivers knowledge of the basic principles, concepts and skills needed to provide direct care in a long-term care facility. A mandatory clinical rotation will give students the opportunity to perform the role of a nurse aide under the guidance of a licensed nurse instructor. Areas of study include basic nursing skills, communication and interpersonal relationships, the role of the nurse aide, anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, measuring vital signs, observation and reporting, patient rights and independence, safety and emergency procedures, personal hygiene, range of motion, Alzheimer’s care, and nutrition. Brightside offers students experienced instructors, state of the art classrooms and labs, renowned clinical facilities, unlimited support, flexible class schedules, and accelerated class options. Students will be eligible to test for Nurse Aide Certification upon completion of the program. The accelerated weekend program meet Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm for three weeks. A new class begins every month. The weekend class meets Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm for eight weeks. New weekend classes begin every three months.

Tuition costs $850 for the weekday program and $900 for the weekend class. Payments may be made in three installments after the initial deposit. Tuition must be paid in full before the final class exam.

B & M Career Institute

Students enrolled in the nursing assistant program at B & M Career Institute will gain a comprehensive knowledge in the field of nursing. Theory and practical classes will cover the necessary skills and abilities students need to care for residents and communicate effectively with patients, their families, and members of the health care team. They will learn how to support patients with the maintenance of functional independence and respect patients’ rights. Experienced instructors will cover turning, positioning, and lifting patients, infection control measures, personal hygiene, legal and ethical issues, basic nursing skills, rehabilitation and restorative services, mental health, social skills, and social service needs. Nutrition, body structure and function, caring for the aged, communication, safety procedures, First Aid, and hospice are some other areas of study. The program will cover 100 contact hours in four weeks.

CTK Healthcare

The Nurse Aide Program at CTK Healthcare equips students with the technical skills and abilities to provide basic care to residents in nursing homes, hospital, and long-term care facilities. The program combines theory and practical work that will enable the development of skills such as the importance of a clean and safe environment for patients, basic first aid and CPR, measuring and recording vital signs, use basic nutrition to plan and prepare meals, following infection control principles, and feeding and dressing patients. The clinical experience at a long-term care facility will give students the opportunity to work together under the supervision of a licensed nurse to understand patients’ needs, provide direct care, and communicate with the health care team. The duration of the program is four weeks. Day and evening classes are available. Day classes meet Monday through Wednesday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Evening classes meet Monday through Wednesday from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Graduates of the state-approved will be eligible to take the state exam to become a Certified Nurse Aide.

Vinepress Training Center

The Nurse Aide program at Vinepress Training Center is approved by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services and prepares students for state certification. Students will participate in active classroom sessions and clinical rotations designed to develop essential skills to perform the role and function of the nurse aide. Instruction will focus primarily on the care of geriatric patients, including their social, spiritual, emotional, and physical needs and rights and independence. Other topics will include personal care skills, such as bathing, hair care, and other activities of daily living, basic nursing skills, vital signs, safety and emergency procedures, data collection and reporting, restorative care, mental health, social skills, conflict resolution, nutrition and meal planning, rehabilitation and restorative services, legal and ethical issues, and hospice care. The clinical experience will cover hands-on experiences in a nursing home where students will demonstrate and perfect the skills learned in the classroom. Persons interested in enrolling in the program should meet with an admissions representative.
