The clinical rotations, directed by experienced, licensed, nurse instructors, give students the opportunity to work directly with patients and make the transition from student to employee. Areas of study include infection control, communication and teamwork, emergency procedures, CPR and First Aid, measuring vital signs, long-term care, promoting patient safety, caregiving skills and procedures, rehabilitative nursing, and patient nutrition. Students must attend all scheduled classroom and clinical hours to graduate from the program. Graduates will be eligible to take the state exam to become a Certified Nurse Assistant.

Through the leadership and experience of California Career Institute instructors, nursing assistant students will develop skills in common practices within the healthcare industry, such as measuring vital signs, collaborating with the healthcare team, communicating with patients and their families, and assisting with personal care. The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) approved curriculum is designed with input from leading professionals to give students the tools to acquire certification and function as competent caregivers. Students will learn how to take vital signs, communication and teamwork, the art of caregiving, providing care, promoting safety, range of motion exercises, special care exercises, and transitioning from a student to employee. The training also includes CPR, FA, and AED. Graduates will be eligible to take the state competency exam and provide care for residents in long-term facilities, home health care, and hospice facilities. Classes meet three days a week for 7 weeks.

  • Attend a campus tour and sign the Enrollment Agreement and disclosures

  • Be a graduate of a high school or recognized equivalent
  • Take and pass the Wonderlic exam with a minimum SLE of 13

The cost of tuition for the program is $1,400. Books, uniforms, and supplies must be covered by the student.

Coast Health Career College

The CNA program offered by Coast Health Career College prepares students to function as an entry-level worker in acute and long-term care facilities. Students will learn the role of the nurse aide in long-term care, interacting and communicating with patients and their families, patient comfort and safety, legal and ethical guidelines to practice, drug interactions, preventative health care, treating injuries, preventing the spread of infections, measuring vital signs, and caring for patients with special needs. The curriculum requires completion of 16 course modules. Students who complete all the required program hours will be eligible to take the State Competency Exam for Certification as a Nursing Assistant in California. Classes meet three days a week for seven weeks. Classes meet from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm in the morning or 12:30 to 4:30 pm in the afternoon for classroom sessions.

  • Complete and submit the application packet
  • Complete the physical examination form. The form must be signed by a licensed physician or nurse practitioner
  • Complete a negative PPD test or chest x-ray – must be completed no more than 6 months before the application date

The nurse aide course offered by North Orange County ROP is designed to prepare high school students with foundational skills to enter the health care sector. The curriculum covers 220 class hours including 120 work-based learning hours. It will include theory and practical instruction in basic nursing care, communication, emergency procedures, and the role of the nurse aide as a member of the health care team. Instructors will also cover extensive preparation for the California State Nurse Assistant Certification.

Admission criteria:

  • Must be a high school student at least 17 years of age
  • Must complete the Medical Careers course with a passing grade
  • Must have valid social security and government-issued ID
  • Take and pass a 2-step TB test
  • Fingerprinting and background check

U.S. Colleges

U.S. Colleges’ comprehensive Nurse Assistant Training Program provides students with the skills and knowledge to succeed as a nurse assistant in long-term care. The curriculum will cover 193 contact hours of theory and practical instruction – 60 hours in the classroom, 32 hours of lab, and 100 hours of clinical activities at a long-term care facility. Students will learn the role and responsibilities of the nursing assistant, patient rights, vital signs, nutrition, emergency procedures, infection control, nutrition, and personal hygiene. Other topics include prevention and management of catastrophe and unusual occurrence, body mechanics, patient care skills, patient care procedures, weights and measures, medical and surgical asepsis, rehabilitative nursing, observation and charting, death and dying, and abuse. The duration of the program is 5 weeks. Morning, afternoon, evening, and weekend classes are available.

Students enrolled in the Certified Nurse Assistant at Platt College will acquire the skills to provide direct care for patients in long-term care. Theory and practical instruction in basic nursing skills, patient safety, and communication provide the foundational skills for entry-level employment and for continued training in allied health and nursing. Graduates will be prepared to sit for the CNA licensure exam and will use their skills to provide competent care to diverse individuals and communities. The program can be completed in two months of full-time attendance or three months part-time.
